The plugin will remove an item and add it at a different index. Knockout sees this as a remove and an add, so the afterAdd callback would be executed.

Thanks for this. A related issue is in the afterMove event ui.item refers to elements that are about to be destroyed. But I can circumvent this in the same way. Deal with everything on afterAdd and flag if it's been dragged or not.
