An update on this one. I moved on to write my own set of aspectj advices (since we use aspectj over Spring AOP for performance reasons). Ryan asked for some more details on the bean relationships mentioned in the error message. I re-introduced the spring-metrics stuff into my spring context and annotated the same method as my original test. However this time around the exception did not occur. The only thing different at this point is that I removed a homegrown aspect & annotation (also named Timed) we'd used for logging metrics in the past. It's possible that this aspect may have interfered with the Sprint AOP aspect but it's difficult to tell.
Completely getting back to the state we were in 6 days ago is going to be a bit of a pain (this project builds against 3 snapshots and I'd have to revert all of them and install locally) so I'm inclined to say that further investigation is not going to be particularly fruitful.
If I do get a chance to get everything reverted for a retest I'll return here and update but for now I'm closing this issue.
