update, I am also seeing the same bug with plain text diff output, try this in a irb session http://pastie.org/3492706

I think I've got this fixed in 0fa41f3. Thanks for bringing it up, let me know if it works for you.

I'll probably release a new version of the gem in the next few days. I'll try to get your feature request in there as well.

I think it's behaving correctly with plaintext. Ruby treats here docs as double quoted strings so that is a real newline in your s1. If you escape the backslash (i.e. \\n) you should get your desired behavior.
