The people behind JScience have developed the unit-of-measure code into a JSR and produced a reference implementation (which of course re-uses much of the code and ideas from JScience). Thus, it is better to use the community library for processing units rather than re-implementing the facility.
The goal now is simply to parse units cleanly within the language. Ideally, this would be done at the lexer level, however it requires parantheses counting. It may be possible to hack this in with javacc.
