I would prefer the .scala build files, since they use Scala as language and are therefore maybe even easier to understand.

I tend to prefer the .scala, but we had a complaint on the channel last night about that change.

This was really just a reminder to myself to go one way or the other - when I wrote the ticket, some of the examples used build.scala, some used build.sbt, and most of them were not compiling with RC3. If build.scala is where it's at, I'll stick with that.
