I think that you did not get the parameter ratio
behaviour.
ratio
correspond to the number of minority samples over the number of minority samples.
Thus, ratio=0.4
mean that the final set will have a proportion of 4 minority samples for 10 majority samples.
In your case, you have 50 samples and you try to over-sample so you will get 50 * .4 = 20
in the minority class and thus 20 - 12 = 8
new samples will be created.
