I've been thinking about this as well; I'd like to create a company backend that's more tightly integrated with the rest of the emacs-eclim code. I think we have two options:

1. Provide a drop-in replacement for the official company-eclim backend by redefining some of its functions to call emacs-eclim. Could be tricky to get this working reliably in all environments, as it kind of depends on which order company-mode and emacs-eclim are loaded and evaluated.
2. Provide a separate backend (company-emacs-eclim?). The problem here is that it could potentially interfere with the regular backend, as you now have two backends providing java completion.

I think we should head for (2). The company-eclim backend can coexist beside emacs-eclim. There is nothing to prevent the user from activating both backends but I think we can document this.

As this ticket is two years old and we have a working (albeit slightly buggy) company-backend now, I think it's safe to close it. ;)
