The code is written in such a way that you could theoretically replace the MailMerge parser with another implementation.

For us Mail Merge fields are working quite well but please do investigate wether support for Empty Fields is easily addable. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

I usually just copy and paste them.

At least for me copying and pasting them does not work Here is a Word macro that makes inserting Mail Merge Fields easier:
