Casting the char to a u64 value makes it work fine. My money is on serde being at fault here.

The Option isn't necessary; a simple char value is enough to trigger this.

which serde version are you using? The yanked 0.7.6 had a bug that was fixed in 0.7.7

So is it true now that if we upgrade serde to 0.7.12, this issue would be solved?
