Grunt minimatch patterns are alredy inherently supported. You're just missing a target in your Grunt config and files is only necessary if you're specifying multiple src/dest blocks per target:

minjson:
  static:
    expand: yes
    cwd: '<%= yeoman.app %>/static'
    src: ['**']
    dest: '<%= yeoman.dist %>/static'

it takes it as file instead of dir

Your pattern src: ['**'] is matching folders. Filter the folders with filter: 'isDirectory' or modify your patterns to not match folders. This is in the Grunt docs: http://gruntjs.com/configuring-tasks#files
