Yes it's very problem dependent. min_val refers to the vertical axis and min_dist refers to the horizontal time axis. The best values you use there will likely be different for each person (as everyone walks differently) as well as other intricacies in your signal.

the default values generally work OK for vertical acceleration signals, but they should be adjusted for your particular signal

in the worst case scenario (which sounds like what you're experiencing) the peak detection might incorrectly detect peaks. this can happen for any number of reasons, and the only way to get around it is to use values that over-detect peaks, and then manually delete the peaks you dont want from the resulting array. its time consuming, but I'm not sure theres a universal way around this with automatic peak detection given how varied gait can be

from sensormotion.
