I'd have done it the other way.
Let's summarize two development stages:
- bootstrapping:
- go fast to the point
- do not care about browser support yet
- hack without thinking about processes
- production/deploying
- time for thinking about processes
- browser support is important
So imho, CDN/dist versions should match bootstrapping stage, i.e. allowing to use vars without needing to go into postprocessing.
And if good browser support is needed, postprocessing should then enter into the loop.
In other words, I'd keep the CDN/dist versions ready for using vars, without caring about old browser support.
Other option: having two files in the CDN/dist, one as it is now, and one that uses modern CSS and allows to use vars.
