The $font-family-chinese is just a temporary variable.

None of the changes in the font section of _config.yml take effect. For example, if you were to assign font.global.family, you wouldn't see any changes. The problem appears be related to this change made to assets/css/main.scss:

-    {% assign values = values | push: site[name] %}
+    {% capture value %}{{ site[name] }}{% endcapture %}
+    {% assign values = values | push: value %}

Reverting the change fixes the problem.

Separately -- and I could be wrong -- but pushing string values might break an assumption in base.scss:148 since that seems to be checking for a numeric value.
