This doesn't work when using the Proton 3.7 Beta. It seems to drop the Beta suffix when checking for the wine executable.

Hm, I'll take a look at that when I finish work. I'm planning to refactor this so that it can switch between proton versions dependent on the proton version defined in the compatdata/APPID/version file. It'll most likely resolve that issue.
Would you mind letting me know what the version string for proton looks like for the particular game that's failing?

Sure @DanielHaroldLane the version string is "Proton 3.7 Beta". This isn't from any game in particular but the situation can be created by having a fresh Steam install and switching to the Proton beta before running any games.
