Thank you very much for reporting this. The simple app seems to be outdated due to my fault. As the app.py should work as-is, please just ignore simple_app.py for now.
I will fix the sample in a few hours.

@susumuota I just resolved the error. Thanks for taking the time to try it out and report this issue!
For your information, if you encounter some timeout errors with Chalice apps, it may be worth trying the simpler style in samples/aws_lambda. Not using any framework apart from Bolt makes your apps really free from cold-start problems.
