I would like to see what that would take and the effects on the core parsing time.

Interesting idea. It's definitely something I'd investigate. :)

How do you get back to slim, though, after you switch to another template language?

I have a file, index.html.slim, at some point I switch to erb with erb: because I have a big block of HTML that I don't want to convert.

If I try to switch back to slim, using slim: I get:

Temple::FilterError at /index.html
Embedded engine slim not found

embedded_engine.rb: in create line 83

I'm using Middleman 3.0.5 FWIW.

For now, I've worked around by just calling an ERB partial.

(Yes, I know that I can also just use HTML now, but then I need to indent it properly)
