Hi, v4.147.0 includes the ability to disable var substitutions as you requested. Note that we simplified a bit your logic to require a couple of flags instead of a global one in addition to the 2 specific ones.
Also added test cases so put this into a new branch that we merged directly. As a result I'll go ahead and close up yours.

Alternatively, if this functionality is needed it might be enough if one could specify an allow-list of vars that one wants to use for substitution.
