Likely a bug, but per your pull request discussion let me first check changing the conversion operator doesn't break other use-cases. In general, var<T> and var<T&> are conceptually 2 different patterns: they are implemented as partial specialization to not have users remember too many pattern names, but semantically they have differences and not all tricks I can use in one implementation are applicable to the other.
