git-branch is used by two aliases and a function. The git-foo commands have not been in $PATH for years. They are now hard links to git and stashed away in /libexec/git-core/ for old scripts to use. Eventually, they will be removed. How much of an issue is this?

This isn't really an issue, but it's a potential bug. I prefer to see it clearly said that OMZ doesn't and won't support the git-command format, meaning that it's possible for OMZ to write its own git-XXX functions.

It's only a bug on old systems. How many years ago have the commands been moved to libexec?

The commands were moved to libexec on 19 August, 2008 with the release of Git 1.6.0. I don't know when they'll be completely removed, probably in 2.0.0.
