You can access the response object from the page object. Mechanize::File is the superclass of Mechanize::Page. It has a method called "response":

The problem with attaching the request is, which request should be attached? What if there was a 302? Problems like that.

Thanks! I see it has the code method too. Perfect. Any thoughts on getting the content-length (bytes received) prior to deflating?

Thank-you for the help on getting to the response. In terms of the other item, I ended up monkey patching response_reader at line 33 with this line in order to get the bytes pre-decompression (chunked encoding in my case--so there was no content-length set):

params[:response]['total_bytes'] = total
