Tested reading and writing of XLS, CSV files again, but still no such error is thrown.
Without proper error message (the entire whoops message would be better) and maybe example xls I can't find out what's going wrong.
Besides that, if you want to select all the columns in your file, the select method is not needed.
The code you gave me won't work without rendering it to an array or object (->toArray(), ->toObject()) btw.
