I am a masters graduate in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics from La Trobe University. Before studying at La Trobe, I completed my Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne. My honours thesis research focused on the impacts of soil pH on the disease severity of soilborne pathogens of field tomatoes, and the experience gave me a strong foundation in statistics and experimental design.

I am a self-taught programmer who developed his passion for coding through Rosalind bioinformatics problems, and the Advanced Bioinformatics pathway of my masters gave me the opportunity to apply my skills to real dry-lab problems and learn new programming languages and tools. For example:

• Developed a 𝚗𝚎𝚡𝚝𝚏𝚕𝚘𝚠 pipeline for processing RNA-seq data, cutting a 3-day manual process to an overnight automated workflow. This laid the groundwork for processing large volumes of RNA-seq data.
• Refactored a collection of python2 scripts into a python3 setuptools-based, unit-tested (pytest) CLI package for generating various machine learning features from RNA-seq data.
• Deployed the above software in a Linux cluster environment.
• Analysing RNA-seq data in the R language through DESeq2 and visualising results in GGplot2 and UpsetR.

The experience ignited my passion for data pipeline engineering in biology, and applying computer science best practices in the field of bioinformatics to improve the efficiency and reproducibility of processes. I am also interested in statistics, and am looking for more opportunities to improve my skills in R.

My hobbies include:

• 🪓 Woodworking (i.e. collecting tools that I may someday use)
• 🕹️ Gaming (the more byzantine, the better e.g. Dwarf Fortress)
• 📷 Photography (I was particularly prolific when I studied agriculture, and there were plenty of canola fields...)
