Maybe it does make sense. In any case it should be the responsibility of the Input/OutputSources to check for null properties (and null RestartData). I'll assign to Lucas, but you can fix it if you have time, Robert. You will need to look at all the Restartable implementations to be sure.

I have modified the restoreFrom(...) methods of all restartable classes to handle null or empty restart data gracefully by returning immediately. So the sample jobs no longer crash when configured to store restart data.
I wonder whether we should treat null and empty restart data differently, lets say allow null as indicator the restart data is not available, but throw exception if the restart data properties are empty / do not contain expected key.
