As the TLS negotiation is rather expensive, implementation of TLS connection support will be much more efficient once transaction support is implemented. This is because the transaction support will prevent connections from being closed, thus reusing the same connection throughout a series of LDAP operations.

This is now supported using the DirContextAuthenticationStrategy functionality. Two different implementations are available: DefaultTlsDirContextAuthenticationStrategy and ExternalTlsDirContextAuthenticationStrategy.

Certificate management in the System properties is intentionally left out of this implementation.
