@khimaros STUN/TURN could be used, but we use ssb-tunnel instead, which is tailored for SSB and has a tiny implementation. In that sense, the primary reason for using ssb-tunnel is that of implementation simplicity, and minimizing the size of dependencies and binaries shipped in production.
are there other requirements, such as that the tunnel must be able to run from within an ssb-pub process?
No, in fact most rooms run completely independently from the concept of a pub. But theoretically they could run together.
