When the user launches the workflow (when jira
is typed into Alfred), a background process is initiated to start retrieving new data and updating out-dated data (see Issue #6). So, in short, the workflow is caching information. Since this is designed to be an Alfred workflow as opposed to a stand-alone app, I didn't want to add any processes (background or otherwise) that aren't initiated by the workflow being launched.
That said, the same script that runs the background processes when the workflow is launched could be daemonized and set to run on a time interval pretty easily. I suppose I could implement it that way so that the user can choose whether to run the script in the background. Does that sound sufficient?
