Such a feature should be outside the scope of retina.js. Just use glue to generate your sprite sheets.

Use the retina mixin for LESS for an easy way to deal with it in CSS. You can use a LESS compiler on your machine instead of installing it on your server. I.e. http://incident57.com/less is a nice one.

Mind the modifications for the @media query (separated with commas, but not with line breaks), otherwise LESS will not compile.
