there's more that goes on other than just stylus in nib, since it is basically a binding to javascript etc it needs to be exposed to stylus via .use(nib()). I have no clue what rails_stylus is doing so im not sure how to integrate it
from nib.

It appears that this is resolved by using the ruby stylus gem with Rails 3.1
https://github.com/lucasmazza/ruby-stylus
I been meaning to upgrade anyway so this is the perfect excuse
from nib.
