How are you trying to change the layout? Via keybinding or by clicking the layout icon in the top bar? Also, all windows in awesomewm are floating by default and will not be affected by changing the layout unless you toggle floating on them by clicking on the first button in the titlebar or by pressing Super+Ctrl+Space. Have you tried this?

Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding. The problem was in the order of connecting the signals in the file. The signal loading the layouts was connected too late, which caused awesomewm to fallback to the default list of layouts. Fixed in f61b482. Only 2 files changed, you can easily update them manually or just pull the changes directly with git.
