rather than using "unlikely to exist in the text" magic begin and end markers it would be better to marker escape the text, say gsub("|", "|_") so that some simple markers, say "|(" and "|)" will not exist in it, insert those markers, then html escape the string then unescape it (gsub("|_", "|"))

of course "marker unescaping" and html escaping must commute, but I think the above simple example has that property.

On second thought, all that format is doing here is replacing one set of magic delimiters with another. "@@@hl@@@" is already html-safe and won't be touched by being escaped. Why not just escape the text then replace the original markers ("@@@hl@@@" and "@@@endhl@@@").
