This 2-finger swipe history navigation animation is default behavior in Safari. Behind the scenes, what's probably going on is that a screenshot of the old page is saved onto the back/forward stack for animation purposes, but when you commit to reopening the page it is reloaded and re-rendered. Reloading the page is a large factor in the delay.
I'm not sure how Vimari could cause a significant change in that load time. Perhaps something the script is doing on page load?
