I think this may be a Qt problem. What version of Qt do you have on your
system? I have seen a crash like this
with Qt 4.3.x on Linux (though not on Mac OS X), but with Qt 4.4.0 it seems to
be fine.
You may have to download and install Qt from source if the 4.4.0 release hasn't
been packaged for your distro
yet.

Closed as WontFix because I believe this is a Qt issue, not TeXworks. Please
reopen the issue if updating to Qt
4.4.0 doesn't resolve it.

The exact same thing happens to me on Windows XP Professional,
TeXworksW32-r161,
TeXworksW32-libs-20080714, and the QT-dlls updated to v. 4.4.1 from the
download at
Trolltech.

Re-opened this as it still seems to be a problem even with newer Qt libs (also
reported by Peter Wüsten)

Using TW r.167 now. I just replaced the QT-dlls with those from the v.4.4.3
binary
distribution from Trolltech - and switching the spell-checking-language doesn't
crash
TW any longer. OTOH it doesn't have any effect, either, except adding red
underlining
to all my text (no matter what language, or whether correct or not).

Spell-checking now works as expected. The former user directory had non-ascii
characters. Setting up a user-account without non-ascii characters solved the
problem. Spaces in path-names don't seem to be a problem, though.

Aha, so there's a problem loading the dictionaries (on Windows, at least) when
there are non-ASCII characters in
the path. Does it also have problems handling text and PDF files in such
directories, or loading other resources
like the completion files or document templates, or does this only affect the
dictionaries?

Loading the dictionaries seems to have been the only problem. Pretty much
everything
else shared the non-ascii component in the path-name. It makes me blush, but the
username I was using contained an 'umlaut' - a pretty daft idea to begin with.
The
obligatory spaces in that path don't seem to matter, however.

BTW, it was the QT 4.4.3 dlls that fixed the crashing problem; the non-loading
dictionaries would actually be a different issue.

With spelling check on, TW will crash when below strings exist in the text.
"GaAS", "oAS", "oAP",
WinXP, MiKtex 2.7,
with newest Bibaryfile: TeXworksW32-r238.zip, TeXworksW32-libs-20080714.zip
dictionary is from open office:

Many thanks to "werbungfuerroy" for his suggestion.
Now, the problem was resolved after I replaced the 3 QT dll (version 4.4.0.0)
files
by the new version files (4.4.3.0).
The files can be obtained by installing QT binary (the one with MinGW compiler
included) from
http://www.qtsoftware.com/downloads/opensource/appdev/windows-cpp
