I have similar issue. Using MacPorts to install ImageMagick and couldn't get Passenger to work with Paperclip using Rails 2.3.2

I've found a semi-solution to this on OS X at this gist: http://gist.github.com/304406

This is a very frustrating issue since the Paperclip extension just ignores any requests for thumbnails without giving a reason why. If the chain is halted, it should be logged as is the case within Rails.

I ran into the same problem with MacPorts+ImageMagick and Rails 3. Paperclip was silently failing to generate any thumbnails. I used the gist posted by tadman and that fixed the problem. Obviously it's not ideal to monkey patch a library, so I hope this can be properly addressed in a future version of paperclip.
