This should not happen and I actually never saw it happen in my setup. One thing I notice is that your candidates are numbered in the first screenshot but not in the second. Candidates are not numbered in my helm setup. I guess that is the root of the problem somehow. How did you switch on numbering? What happens when you switch it off?

Good point I hadn't noticed that. This is coming from enabling global linum mode in my config:
(global-linum-mode 1)
If I switch this off the issue goes away which TBH works for me (so feel free to close this).
Still, in the second screenshot, the first line still has a "line number", which is not even correct. May be some funky business with helm and linum?

I could check whether linum is switched on and try to work around it if necessary. But doing that for all modes that could possibly interfere with helm-bibtex would be cumbersome. I guess it's the user's responsibility to not combine modes that don't work well together. Not sure, though. I'll close this issue for now but will think about it.
