Hi, Uppy is a big 8 year old codebase. Different patterns and complexities are all over the place and this would be a massive effort for a questionable gain. It also sounds like an XY problem, this is your suggested solution while your problem can take many solutions.

I don't think it makes sense to implement error codes so users can report it to you so you can report it to us. We developers should together make sure the software is stable in almost all cases and leave users out of it, except for some errors we anticipate, and inform the user of those.

The current error handling is inconsistent and poorly defined, making it difficult to provide useful feedback to the user or useful debugging information for developers.

Instead of a big overarching issue, I recommend you report specifically in which cases the user or developer is not sufficiently informed and create a reproducible example for it so we can take a look.
