Compilation on OSX 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion)

Dear Epreston,
It would be easiest for us to integrate the necessary fixes if you could provide a patch that makes things work for everybody: both for OSX and Linux and BSD users.
If that is not possible, it would help if you can show us the current state of the files that you had to modify. Maybe we can integrate something that you had to change. Or maybe we know that the change you had to make won't harm Linux users so we can just put it in.

If you used "git" to clone this repository, use "git diff" to find the changes you made.

It seems 25a2456 fixed most of these problems. HEAD compiles on my OS X 10.8.4, so a 0.86 release should be Mac-ready. The last version that compiled was 0.82.

FYI, I confirm that I have successfully compiled last git revision under OS X 10.8.5 with the following command:

./bootstrap.sh && ./configure --without-gtk && make

The same issue affection compilation on Mountain Lion is currently also bricking compilation on Mavericks/10.9.

We're tracking the issue for homebrew in Homebrew/legacy-homebrew#23231 and for 10.9 HEAD also builds just fine. I was hoping I could count on a release for 0.86 sometime soon or I'll have to pick together a set of patches to carry in Homebrew for now (something I'd rather avoid).

Ok. I'll see what I can do.... over the weekend. Some new (solaris & equivalent) issues have popped up today, but I need help in getting it in autoconf instead of just "#ifdef __sun". (if there is no news by sunday morning, remind me by adding something here).

Current git version compiles fine with --without-gtk on 10.9.3 as of 0cc9f56 (actually a few versions earlier, but..)
