OK. I removed
.deps
automate.cache
from the tarfile. As well as a make clean. I put the first two things in my "make a release" script. The last was already there, but the script was "manually executed" last time. So I may have manually done something too much or too little....
I know for next time that I'll have to keep an eye out on the release script... It should work but hasn't been tested. (and it does "public" things like pushing things to github, so I can't test it without actually doing the release).
