I was thinking that implementing rules for layouting might be more efficient than storing actual positioning information. If you assume that any new connections to an owned "ideascape" only come after opt-in, that would mean that the same rules would layout the same ideascape in the same way, still allowing a user to use it's visual memory for ideas in a specific context.

I think indeed that positioning will not be stored. Some consistency may indeed be achieved by having some layout rules. We could start with a simple spring-based model, I would like to find some simple js library to delegate the positioning to, not sure what's out there.

I have by the way been thinking about storing views/positions for users individually. One's browsing history could anyway be considered as a valuable asset to store, but that's a whole branch of ideas to explore another time.
