I will make an attempt to look at this with an Alpine Linux install I have. Need to test this myself first to see if I understand the problems correctly, was a while since I tried running X from Finit.
Edit: Now that I think about, I'm pretty sure I've only set up modern Finit to start XDM/GDM, not to launch the startx command. Maybe we should remove the confusing startx setting in Finit and recommend running startx manually after login, or use XDM/GDM?
