However, it's typically not a good idea to create figures separately. Do you know tikz and pgfplots? The former can be used for drawing or to draw labels on top of an existing image, the latter is great to create beautiful plots within latex, e.g. one can readily use csv with data points.

I will have a look at your recommandations. However, most of my figures are schematic, not plots which can be easily mathematically desribed. I draw them on Powerpoint and save tham as pictures afterwards.

We also create schematics with tikz. It's sometimes a bit more effort but it has some advantages (random example: http://www.texample.net/tikz/examples/android/).
