The best approach that scales somewhat is probably:

• Create a Python library for going through the code
• Make calls like cursor.chase (pattern) and allow copying cursors for nesting
• Patterns could be '30 82' or '[30|10] 82' or '30/df 82'
• Actions might be to parse a length (in various modes), run a callback, ...
• Make a call like cursor.comment (blablah)
• Consider to have not just a cursor type but also a range type
• Make calls to validate being at the end of a file
• Support ASN.1 / DER processing with calls to the walk syntax of Quick DER

Given an application's data format, it should be doable to gradually script the analysing capabilities and get really useful readouts on our binary output as development progresses. Scripts can be 100% tailor-made and even invoke external programs.
