Please give me an example of some tags or people you would like to add to such a blacklist?

I feel this would bring the quotes-handling complexity higher than it makes sense (it's already way up there and needs simplifying), and is generally a poor solution for not showing quotes one may not like (because one can never filter out all possible keywords). Wallpapers are actually not filtered out either, there is only a blacklist of previously deleted wallpapers.

Also, quotes are pluginnable - once can easily take any of the several quotes' plugins from under /usr/share/variety/plugins/quotes/, modify it to to filter stuff out or apply other logic for what's shown and not, then put is as a new plugin under ~/.config/variety/plugin.

A possible related thing we may consider doing is to filter out the default tags (e.g. those listed in GoodreadsSource.py) to just very non-sketchy non-controversial stuff... But I'm not sure I'd like to censor things for everybody just to avoid controversial topics like e.g. religion. There's Quote -> Next for these purposes.

Since there hasn't been any additional information added to this request, I'll give my own suggestions as I've been wanting this for some time as well.

Some examples of blacklisted tags might be:

  • nsfw
  • sexy
  • bikini
  • cars
  • fortnite
  • religion / religious

The general theme here is to have wallpaper and quotes that I don't have to worry about popping up something unacceptable at work if I lock my laptop and walk away. This has happened before with some image sources, and they were so frequent that I had to remove the source all together (I don't recall that source at the moment).

Example syntax might look something like:

art, flower(,s), landscape(,s), !nsfw, !car(,s), !relig(ion,ious)

[just donated, awesome program, btw]
I'd like to throw my vote behind supporting some kind of quote filter.

One option would be selecting which tags are included (seriously, I get way too many Christianity quotes, but I'm part of a non-abrahamic religion, so they are just annoying)

However, imho, a simpler solution might be allowing us to just filter words themselves with a search-replace. Certain words may not be considered appropriate for some people for their children's eyes, others may be triggered by certain words, others may just think it's funny to replace every instance of "blue" with "aquamarine with silky hints of egg shell and navy"

For example:
Replace "c*nt" with "a fine, but angry lady" (for censoring for children)
Replace "Eagle" with "Tux the Penguin" (for those that want to revel in linux pride)
Replace "Vietnam" with "Overseas military engagements" (to avoid triggering those who lived through it)
Replace "Love" with "Unrestricted Lust" (for the self-troller.)
Replace "God" with "Gods" (for Hindus, Wiccans, Pagans, Druids, and many more)
etc.
