You are right, to_s will be called when looking to represent to record. In any case, try not to rely 100% on ActiveRecord validations, as inconsistencies might creep into your database at some point from other database connections, an admin panel, etc where those ActiveRecord validation rules do not count.

One option could be:

class User < ActiveRecord::Base
  validates :name, presence: true
  # ...

  def name
    self['name'] || 'Guest user'
  end

  def to_s
    name && name.titleize
    # or
    name.try(:titleize)
  end
end

Hmmm, that's fair. I guess having exceptions within to_s is pretty much 100% the classes fault.
