👍 Using gems to distribute binaries feels wrong to me. As a user, I don't have to care about implementation details (language the tool is written in, for instance). Same goes for using npm
or pip
or any language-specific package manager. Homebrew (or Macports) is the right way to distribute CLI software on OS X. Please take a look at https://github.com/thoughtbot/liftoff as an example if you need help getting started.

I'm actually pretty indifferent. From the looks of it, homebrew would actually make installation a tad bit more complicated, even. Users would need to tap the formula before installing, two commands rather than a single gem install
. In reality, it doesn't make it that much worse, but it hardly seems like an upgrade.
In the end, the user will need a stable version of Ruby to run synx, regardless of if they install via Homebrew or RubyGems. I'm able to confidently say that most objective-c devs are familiar with RubyGems, since most tooling is distributed via gems (cocoapods
, nomad-cli
, etc).
