1.7.10 is very much still supported, don't worry.
The only option I can see for this is making a separate, entirely new command to communicate with the chat box, which kind of defeats the point of the chat box, unfortunately. Giving chat boxes the ability to "eat" messages so they won't appear in chat is too easy to abuse, so that's not an option, either. If you have any good ideas, let me know.

Alternatively, you could perhaps convince your players to use a different system: Instead of a chat box, you could give each of the players a tablet that could use linked cards or (if range is not an issue) wireless cards to communicate with whatever command block system you have running. I'm not sure if that is better than your current system.

I'm currently begging them to have OpenComputers check a small web application that they run so they click buttons in their browser and it just does what they want from the web browser instead of the chat :D

Giving chat boxes the ability to "eat" messages so they won't appear in chat is too easy to abuse, so that's not an option, either.

Not even as a configurable option that is opt-in in the Computronics config? (I know, I know, this is starting to sound a lot like https://xkcd.com/1172/)
