Please make sure you don't have another crypt on your PATH.

I'm afraid this is the same issue as with homebrew, the version is set at compile time in the Makefile, since the go get and homebrew don't use make, it would require a more sophisticated mechanism or some workarounds.

Maybe making binary releases more prominent would make this less of an issue, I know it's easy to skip the text about download page.

Your comments make sense because now I have used the downloaded the release version I get the correct version.
