Is this because munin-node wasn't installed?

No, munin-node was installed as a dependency of escenic-munin-plugins. Looking at this again on a compeltely fresh system, just doing apt-get install escenic-munin-plugins, I see the error message in question stem from munin-node itself:

Warning: The home dir /var/lib/munin you specified can't be accessed: No such file or directory
