I think I know what you mean, but a code sample would be really useful.

Do you mean something like:

mongoose.on('ready', function () {
  startTests();
});

?

This is tricky, but there's a solution we use across nodejitsu codebase. Here are lines of code to follow in example project:

So, basically, you call addBatch and initialize something (e.g. mongoose) as a test.
