There's probably a way to support that, URL param is probably the most obvious choice here.

it would just be another endpoint like https://github.com/nedap/puppetboard/blob/master/puppetboard/app.py#L171 and passing a param right? we would then need to filter down using something like hostname or status

Not exactly. Request parameters, say ?filter=something don't get their own endpoint as the endpoint would still be the same, /nodes/whatever but you would need to check for request.args and what's inside them. You could then dispatch to a different function, just not one with an @route decorator.
