When you in dev server we store assets in memory for perf reasons, that is why you don't need files, we have an options for webpack-dev-server if you need to store some assets in your file system

Please use:

          from: "src/**/*.jpg",
          to: "[name].[contenthash][ext]",
},

You can don't use [contenthash], but if you can have multiple files with the same name the lastes override previos, so I recommend to use [contenthash] to avoid it.

Starting from your hint I got to what I needed:

					to: "[name].[ext]",
				},

It is worth noting that in development this does not work.
In order to have it work in dev server, it needs to have the extension explicitly set:

				{
					from: "src/*.jpg",
					to: "[name].jpg", // [ext] keyword does not work on dev server
				},

I am not sure why, but setting the extension explicitly it works in both build and dev server.
